The "Missionary" vs. the Anti or Counter Missionary

"Isaiah 42:5-9
New King James Version (NKJV)

5 Thus says God the LORD,
Who created the heavens and stretched them out,
Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it,
Who gives breath to the people on it,
And spirit to those who walk on it:
6 “ I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness,
And will hold Your hand;
I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people,
As a light to the Gentiles,
7 To open blind eyes,
To bring out prisoners from the prison,
Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
8 I am the LORD, that is My name;
And My glory I will not give to another,
Nor My praise to carved images.
9 Behold, the former things have come to pass,
And new things I declare;
Before they spring forth I tell you of them.”"

This verse is often interpreted as Yisra'el's call to be ha ner el ha goyim-- "the light to the nations".

Isaiah 2:3
Many people shall come and say, “ Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Micah 4:2
Many nations shall come and say, “ Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion the law shall go forth, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

These verses are also part of Yisra'el's being as ha ner el ha goyim. There are missions of outreach such as JewFAQ.org (which is insidiously Antimissionary) and the Outreach Judaism Haredi, all the way down to Reform, movements-- all of which with few exceptions are very Antimissionary.

The "Missionary" or Jewish Christian (Messianic Jewish) movement applies Yesha'yahu 42:5-9 in its original context-- as a fulfilled prophecy concerning Mashiach:

(Emphasis mine)

 Thus says God the LORD,
Who created the heavens and stretched them out,
Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it,
Who gives breath to the people on it,
And spirit to those who walk on it:
6 “ I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness,
And will hold Your hand;
I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people,
As a light to the Gentiles,
7 To open blind eyes,
To bring out prisoners from the prison,
Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
8 I am the LORD, that is My name;
And My glory I will not give to another,
Nor My praise to carved images.
9 Behold, the former things have come to pass,
And new things I declare;
Before they spring forth I tell you of them.”"

In the last section of TaNaKH ("H" for "Hadashah"), we find this parsha from Mattiyahu 28:

Matthew 28:18-20

New King James Version (NKJV)
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore[a] and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.[b]

Indisputably clear is that a Jewish or gentile Christian (especially a Jewish Christian in the "Missionary" regard) is not to force his or her faith on anyone, Jewish or gentile:

  1. Matthew 10:14
    And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.
  2. Mark 6:11
    And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”
  3. Luke 9:5
    And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”
  4. Acts 13:51
    But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and came to Iconium.
