#ThrowbackThursday: Temperature Check

 Getting a fever at the vet’s on Tuesday due to anxiety (as her “Mom-Mom” says that she gets when she goes to the vet) did not help. The vet, however, said that she also had a  bit of a hard time taking care of Reilly because Reilly (since she does love her vet) would not stop demanding scritches and belly rubs! So, at least Reilly did not have too hard of a time at the vet! nonetheless, she had to get her temperature checked yesterday as a precaution.

Keep in mind that either there were no local Jewish cemeteries in some communities or your ancestors for whatever reason either married outside of the traditional Jewish faith or were converted to Christianity—whether willingly or forcibly. Anusim v’bnei Anusim Ashkenazim (Ashkenazi Crypto Jews and descendents thereof) get overlooked a lot, mainly because many of us ended up believing (and still believe) in Jesus and/or otherwise did (and/or do) not fit the mold of what Anusim are apparently supposed to be: Sephardi, secretly Rabbinically Jewish (Both secret Karaites and Jesus-believing Anusim get overlooked.), not mixed blooded (or if we are, straight-down-matrilineally Jewish), and willing to reconvert to traditional (i.e., Rabbinical) Judaism if we end up finding out that we’re Jewish.

Just because some people (perhaps even within your own family) when to tell you that you’re not Jewish just because you’re not religiously Rabbinically Jewish, that does not mean that you are not Jewish. I have had the same problem with people trying to tell me that my ethnicity is contingent on my religion and my blood purity (it is sickening; and I have had people tell me that because I did not get the luck of getting known autosomal JewishDNA according to some websites, I am apparently not Jewish.). Don’t let the limpiezistas (blood purists) and others get to rob you of your heritage.

PS This also applies in regards to the racist activist group at one university—“limpieza de sangre” and inquisitions of any kind have no place in any decent society.

 PS An irony: Reilly understands the concept of Santa more than she does audio recording and playback. Then again, every puppy (just like every human toddler) is different—although audio recording and playback would conceivably seem easier for a puppy and a toddler to understand.

I am a Jewish Christian and grew up not knowing that I am Jewish. I also believed in Santa until I was in my teens. If I ever have human children, therefore, I will explain to them as I explained to my fur child: about the historical Santa and how he inspired the concept of the modern one. Of course, I think that my fur child misbehaves a little more now that she knows that the real Santa died a long time ago 😬😆.

Commentary: George Bailey was not a good man

George Bailey was actually quite the putz. Not that Sam was better, so Mary got herself caught up with two bad men. Back to George, meanwhile: in the beginning of the movie, he verbally abuses her and talks about having a harem when he grows up. In the scene in which he goes to the high-school dance, he sexually harasses her—and there is nothing cute or funny about taking a robe from a girl and claiming that everybody will be on your side for your doing it. In the phone call in which he goes to her house, he gets physically violent with her during the phone call with Sam—and he had already gone there uninvited and became verbally abusive toward her when she asked what he wanted. 

Clearly by now, there is a progression here that should be seen by and to troubling everybody whom watches the movie: George Bailey was a verbally-abusive and misogynistic young boy, and he never grew out of that when he became a man. In fact, it got worse as he became older. He may have had moments where he seemed like a nice guy, although he ultimately wasn’t— and if it wasn’t already reflected in how he treated Mary before, it was certainly reflected in the way that he took the phone from her when Mrs. Welsh called, verbally berated Mrs. Welsh, and then proceeded to verbally abuse his family as well as violently break multiple objects in front of them. 

He also mistreated other people, including his mother, Annie, and his uncle Billy. So, Mary was not the only victim of his could-be-charming-and-was-ultimately-a-toxic-person self.

PS On Reddit, where I originally posted this, I already received one verbally abusive comment and have seen other comments in which the posters are defending George Bailey‘s behavior just because he did some purportedly-good things (notwithstanding what his motives might’ve been) and/or took up causes which they support. They’re only going to prove my point as well as making me wonder who they themselves are abusing.

Commentary: A 7,000 Wedding Attendance and Piku’ach Nefesh—Plus the Constitiution

Recently, a Haredi sect known as the Satmarim committed a chillul HaShem. They also violated a perfectly-Constitutional ordinance. Of course, the past Anti Semitism of Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York did and does not help mattersⁱ—in other words, the Satmarim and other critics, whether rightly or wrongly, couched his criticism of the 7,000-attendee wedding as Anti Semitism. 

Regardless of Governor Cuomo‘s motives, he is absolutely correct in this case. When there is a state of emergency declared, everybody needs to follow the regulations that do not specifically go against the constitution. There is nowhere in the Torah that says that 7,000 people must be at a wedding for it to be a valid wedding ceremony, the State of New York is therefore not violating others’ First Amendment rights. In fact, Torah requires that only two or three faithful and truthful witnesses are needed to establish any matter; so, that the Satmarim did not have their rights violated in any way is obvious on that count alone. Besides, they violated the principle of piku’ach nefesh—which both the mitzvot of loving one’s neighbor as one’s self and choosing life cover.

Seeing that to be the case, then, any law-abiding judge would rule, “Your own Scriptures require no more than three witnesses to establish a matter. The Constitution, meanwhile, talks about providing ‘for the general welfare’, and you have a related principle known as ‘piku’ach nefesh’—or the ‘sake of the soul’. Because of this, I hereby rule that the State of New York neither prohibited your free exercise of religion, nor infringed on your right to peacefully assemble, nor denied nor disparaged your rights in any other way—and this is notwithstanding the governor’s alleged motives based on his past conduct.”
